Swan

DesignMarch 2011 | Colorful swans and blankets over a cup of tea

As it was raining today I thought it was a pretty good idea to check out the teaparty at Aurum, Bankastræti 4. They were serving tea in beautiful porcelain cups by designer Guðbjörg Ingvarsdóttir, who is best known for her jewelry but has recently presented tablewear decorated with petite flowers, much similar to her jewelry lines.

I seem to have been little over-excited and arrived too early. The designers were just getting ready, the tea was still brewing and the models who were scheduled to have a two hour live teaparty by the window had not yet arrived (although the table was ready, lace tablecloth and all).

Fortunately, this gave me an opportunity to have a little talk with textile designer Brynja Emilsdóttir. She has been making these colorful children’s blankets and pillows from icelandic wool. The line is called Leikgleði and some of the pieces are multifunctional in that they can also be used as floor mats, and thus can “grow” with the baby.

Bryndís Bolladóttir was presenting her new line Lokkandi, also focusing on all-Icelandic materials such as wool, fur and fish skin. Most notable were the big swans, meant either as toys (how fun to ride a swan!) or just quirky sculptures.

I didn’t dare try sitting on the swans in spite of really, really wanting to. Maybe I will go again tomorrow and see if I can make up the courage. Aurum will be open Friday 25.03 10 am – 6 pm, Saturday 26.03 11 am – 5 pm and Sunday 27.03 11 am – 5 pm.
